The International Air Transport Association (IATA) – a trade association of airlines based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada was established in April 1945, in La Habana, Cuba. This is the successor to the International Air Traffic Association founded in Den Haag in 1919, which is the year of the first international scheduled service. As its founding, IATA consisted of 57 members from 31 countries, mostly in Europe and North America. Today, the association has 270 airlines from 140 countries around the world. Members also together regulate the carriage of dangerous goods and publish the IATA Dangerous Goods Handbook, a globally accepted reference book for shipping dangerous goods by air.

IATA is a strong, unified and professional voice representing the global aviation industry to support and enhance the benefit of its members, to promote reliable and effective cooperation between members, including airlines as well as air freight agents.
